About this course
Our Human‑Factored Procedure Writer Training is built on industry‑recognized standards from the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) and the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), endorsed by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and a Systematic Approach to Training, giving writers practical tools to improve procedure and work instruction quality, consistency, and human performance.
Because Procedure Solutions Management helped develop these standards, we are able to better explain the “why” behind each requirement so that writers gain a deeper understanding and develop stronger retention, as compared to other general technical writing workshops.
The course directly addresses common issues with level of detail and human factors, including Areas for Improvement (AFIs) identified by the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) and lessons learned from industries such as Oil & Gas and the Department of Energy. Writers learn how to recognize these issues in their own procedures and correct them.
Taught by experienced industry professionals, this training benefits both new and seasoned writers by introducing a human‑factored lens for viewing content and formatting. No matter your industry or experience level, you’ll gain practical, real‑world skills that elevate your procedure writing, better support safety and reliability, and equip you to explain these principles to others and help shift your organization's culture toward stronger human performance.

The training addresses common challenges with the appropriate level of detail and the application of human factors in work instructions. It highlights how insufficient or inconsistent detail has contributed to Areas for Improvement (AFIs) identified by the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), including incorrect work order details, missing support tasks, and other omissions that can lead to equipment failures, unplanned unavailability of critical equipment, rework, and inaccurate ALARA estimates.
